Progress Update on Neom: Saudi Arabia's Futuristic City

Progress Update on Neom: Saudi Arabia's Futuristic City

22.05.2024

The Airbus satellite constellation is monitoring the progress of Neom, Saudi Arabia's ambitious futuristic vision situated in the northwest of the country. From The Line to the Beach Resort, the Ski Station and the Floating City, these projects can be meticulously tracked from space to monitor the substantial constructions underway in the region.

Four Distinct Zones

Neom's design is divided into four distinct zones, each marked on the Basemap created here with our SPOT satellite imagery:

  • The Line: A hub for living, commerce and workspaces
  • Trojena: A haven for skiing and leisure pursuits
  • Sindalah: A beachfront retreat
  • Oxagon: A nexus for cutting-edge port facilities and high-tech ventures

Integrated Lifestyle
Cutting-edge technology and digital infrastructure will manage the administrative functions of these zones. Residents will enjoy high-speed wireless internet, robotic assistants, aerial drone taxis and bioluminescent beaches. With renewable energy, Neom aims to become a global hub for biotechnology, media and entertainment.

The Line, a City defined by an unique linear urban model

The Line will be unlike any other city, with two mirrored facades stretching over 170 km through the desert. Managed by artificial intelligence, it will accommodate 9 million inhabitants. The excavation of the earth in the area is impressive as the construction site extends over several kilometres. In this Pléiades Neo image from 14 October, 2023, we can track the route of trucks carrying earth from the excavation area to the clearing zone.

Oxagon, port and technologies

The Oxagon project, a floating octagonal city, will become the "largest floating structure in the world" with an AI-controlled port, an industrial research and development center and a green energy production facility.

In this Pléiades image from April 8, 2024, the clearing of the channel that will connect the two bays is underway. It will form the city's central island. On the land part of the site, the port is already operational and the industrial complex will be built around this site. Work to the floating part of the city located to the west of the central island has not yet begun.

Trojena, the Ski Resort

Trojena has been chosen to host the 9th Asian Winter Games in 2029. Activities such as skiing, mountain biking, hiking and a wide range of leisure activities will spread over nearly 60 km² between 1,500 to 2,600 meters above sea level. It will be the first outdoor ski resort in the Middle East.
The road network is fully constructed to allow bulldozers, excavators and trucks to contribute to the earthmoving work before the building foundations are laid. The Pléiades Neo image from October 14, 2023, reflects the urbanization of three sites on mountain peaks.

Sindalah, the Beach Resort

Sindalah is a project to cluster artificial islands covering an area of approximately 840,000 m² in the Red Sea. The luxury beach resort will feature an 86-slip marina for yachts up to 50 meters in size, a holistic spa, hotels, restaurants and a golf course.
In this Pléiades Neo HD15 image from December 2, 2023, work is underway across the island. Cranes, beams and concrete slabs are clearly visible. The golf course acts as a focal point, delineating three distinct habitat and leisure zones, all facing the sea. The channel leading to the Marina has been dug to the northeast of the island.
