The EU has adopted a landmark legislation, named EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), whose aim is to reduce the EU's impact on global deforestation. By requiring companies to prove that their products are not linked to deforestation, this regulation plays a crucial role in preserving tropical forests and fighting climate change.
It is now mandatory for companies to establish or update their Due Diligence System by meticulously documenting their supply chains, and conducting thorough deforestation risk assessments and mitigation where necessary.
The EU explicitly identifies the role of geospatial data in its framework as an essential asset for achieving EUDR objectives. With Starling, companies rely on accurate and actionable data to engage their suppliers, mitigate risks and verify commitments.

- Companies must prove that their products do not originate from recent deforestation and are in full compliance with their national laws

- Companies that do not respect these conditions face a fine of up to 4% of their annual turnover in the EU
The EUDR will become applicable as of 30 December 2024.
The legislation sets mandatory due diligence rules for operators or traders placing specific commodities on the EU market or exporting them: palm oil, cocoa, rubber, coffee, timber, soy and cattle, as well as their derivatives.

Is my company affected by EUDR?
The EUDR affects any company that imports the relevant commodities listed in the “scope” section above on the EU market or supplies those products to or from the EU market (distribution, consumption or use).
Can Starling be used for any commodity?
Starling is currently fully operational for the following commodities: palm oil, coffee, cocoa, rubber, soy, timber and pulp and paper. Starling is open to develop further to meet our customers’ needs, exploring new commodities and mapping out new geographical areas.
Does the land cover basemap take EUDR definitions into account in its classification of forests?
Starling follows the definitions of the EUDR for all forest types. “Forest” is comprised of various sub-categories: primary forest, naturally regenerated forest, planted forest and plantation forest. Starling takes into account tree composition, structural and surface criteria to detect and differentiate between these classes, as per the definitions of the legislation.
Does Starling use any particular cut-off date?
Starling allows users to adapt the monitoring cut-off date according to their specific needs. In the scope of the EUDR, the cut-off date was established on December 31, 2020, meaning that products and commodities linked to deforestation or forest degradation after that date are not permitted in EU markets.
What if I don't have traceability data on my supply chain?
Where traceability is not yet complete, Starling is able to run analysis over a radius around a mill or GPS coordinate to get status of deforestation and risk associated. For palm oil, we dispose of supply chain data directly embedded in the platform.
